The German National Atlas, edited by the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography, provides a wide range of information on physical, economic and social themes in Germany. In a total of twelve volumes, some 600 geographers, scientists from related disciplines and cartographers paint a comprehensive picture of spatial differentiation in our many-faceted country. Under the direction of the IfL, which was responsible for editing, cartography and layout, a type of display window has been created for the country with more than 2000 pages of maps, diagrams and explanatory texts. The atlas, which was completed in 2007, is not only an excellent source of knowledge as to how our country works. It is also intended to inform and to help to break down prejudices about "the Germans", and for the Germans themselves, about the "other Germans".

In addition to the print edition, all twelve thematic volumes of the National Atlas are also available on CD-ROM. As well as the complete contents of the printed atlas, the electronic edition contains a large number of interactive maps and animations. A particularly attractive element is the iKart module with which maps of Germany on a wide range of topics and with data at local administrative district level can be generated, redesigned and compared. Thus spatial differences that shape our country - between East and West or North and South or between town and country - can be seen directly. Further advantages in comparison with the printed version are the availability of search functions and active reference sources (Internet).
The German National Atlas is published by Spektrum Akademischer Verlag.
The German National Atlas is only partly financed by funds from the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography. Such a project would not have been possible without additional funding from foundations and government ministries.
