The opening of the Iron Curtain, the unification of Germany, the decomposition of the Soviet Union and – last but not least – the integration of (Western) Europe are forces and events whose cumulative effects resulted in sudden and dramatic changes in the political geography of Europe. Confrontation as the dominant mode of East-West relations has been replaced by co-operation – or at least by the proclaimed intention to do so. The schematic East-West dichotomy gives way a new diversity in Central and Eastern Europe and consequently in East-West relations.
The volume presents 28 contributions of internationally renowned authors from many European countries. The topics include:
- urban areas and the emerging European metropolitan system
- East-West economic relations
- new migration patterns
- boundaries and border regions
- minorities and ethnic conflicts
- geopolitics and the changing political landscape.
